The Israeli government has approved preliminary plans to build 500 new settler homes in East Jerusalem, homes the international community considers illegal. The U.S. said the decision to move forward with construction was not conducive to “peace in the region and a two-state solution.” The announcement followed days of tension around the Temple Mount, which the Israeli government closed briefly last week.
