The end of the apartheid era in
South Africa brought a clean slate for justice in the country.
South Africa‘s
Constitutional Court was established in 1994 to interpret the new constitution. The
Constitutional Court itself was built on the site of a former prison that held both, Nelson Mandela and Ghandi. With its open architecture and stunning public art collection, the court defies traditional expectations and captures the spirit of
South Africa‘s transition to democracy.
Justice Albie Sachs is a South Africa Constitutional Court Justice. He was in
Chicago as the Richard and Ann Pozen Visiting Professor of Human Rights at the
University of
Chicago. Justice Sachs helped establish the vast art collection in the
Constitutional Court and documented the effort in the book “Art and Justice: The Art of the Constitutional Court of South Africa.”
