A graphic novelist who created the the superhero series La Borinqueña, Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez joined Worldviewlast summer to speak about the process of creating an Afro-Boricua heroine. In the comics, La Borinqueña teams up with DC comic book favorites, including Wonder Woman, to rebuild Puerto Rico. Now, Miranda-Rodriguez is engaging in work similar to his heroine’s, and he returns to Worldview to explain.

Miranda-Rodriguez has been using the proceeds from his comic book sales to provide grants to organizations that have been rebuilding Puerto Rico since Hurricane Maria devastated the island in 2017. Last summer, nine organizations received $10,000 La Borinqueña grants. From reef conservation to literacy initiatives, the grant recipients address a wide range of issues on the island. Miranda-Rodriguez now looks forward to awarding the next round of grants in summer 2019.
