WBEZ’s food, culture and health reporter Monica Eng recently saw “La Havana Madrid,” a documentary theater experience based on the true story of a 1960s Chicago nightclub, La Havana Madrid, and the lived experiences of Cuban, Puerto Rican and Colombian immigrants to Chicago who found refuge there. After sold out runs at the Goodman Theatre and Steppenwolf Theatre a few years ago, the hit show has returned to Chicago, to The Den Theatre in Wicker Park. Monica sat down at The Den with actors Sandra Delgado and Mike Oquendo to talk about the largely lost Latinx history in Lakeview and Lincoln Park. Delgado wrote and stars in “La Havana Madrid,” and Oquendo plays Tony Quintana, the one-time owner of the club and host of the popular 1960s Chicago radio show “Tony’s Latin A-Go-Go.”
