Every Wednesday, hundreds of Beninese men and women don red bandanas, t shirts, dresses and any other article of clothing. Their reason for wearing red has little to do with fashion and everything to do with politics. On Wednesday, July 17th, Alternative Citoyenne, a grassroots organization launched “Mercredi rouge” (“Red Wednesday”), weekly protests against Beninese president Yayi Boni’s proposal to amend the constitution. Boni, now in his second presidential term, wants to add an amendment that would make him eligible for a third presidential term in 2016. According to Boni, a third mandate would help him strengthen economic development in Benin. Renata Sago tells us more. (Photo: Xinhua).
