Learning Theology And Philosophy Through Film
Ever think of discussing Groundhog Day with a Buddhism scholar? How about chatting about Elmer Gantry with Martin Marty, one of America’s most-noted religious scholars.
The film series “Religion In the Frame” offers the opportunity to do just that! For six consecutive nights, scholars from the University of Chicago’s Divinity School discuss religious ideas and themes that permeate popular film. The series also marks the 20th anniversary of the Martin Marty Center and Marty’s 90th birthday.
Gretchen Helfrich, the former host of WBEZ’s Odyssey, board member at Facets Chicago, and an advisory board member at the University of Chicago Divinity School’s Martin Marty Center, is one of the organizers of the series. Helfrich and Martin Marty join Worldview to discuss how we can learn about religion and philosophy through film.
“Religion in the Frame” runs Jan. 28–Feb. 2 at Facets Cinémathèque, 1517 W. Fullerton Ave. in Chicago.
