Some human rights observers have noted that in developing regions projects driven by the extractive industries, while bringing profits and development for some, have also resulted in displacement and disenfranchisement for many more, especially women and children. Oxfam has brought two of its researchers to Chicago to participate in Catholic Relief Services’ annual Information and Communications Technologies for Development (ICT4D) Conference. The conference facilitates discussion on how technology can be used as a positive humane tool to drive development. Richard Hato-Kuevor, Ghana program officer for Oxfam and Benjamin Boakye, director of operations for the African Centre for Energy Policy join us to discuss their work to empower vulnerable communities and monitor energy companies in their region.
