WBEZ Film Contributor and director at Facets Chicago Milos Stehlik chats with documentary filmmaker and anthropologist J.P. Sniadecki. His new avant-garde film, El Mar La Mar, uses sight and sound collages to relay mystical visions, along with the concrete realities of Mexican migrants making their way to the U.S. through the Sonoran Desert. Sniadecki is also an assistant professor of radio, television and film at Northwestern University.

Stehlik also reviews You Were Never Really Here, the new thriller from Scottish filmmaker Lynne Ramsay. Joaquin Phoenix stars as Joe, a military veteran and former FBI agent. To deal with PTSD, and make peace with other haunting memories, he becomes a mercenary rescuing young girls from sex trafficking rings around New York City. You Were Never Really Here is playing at Arclight, AMC River East, Landmark Century. El Mar La Mar is showing at the Gene Siskel Film Center through April 24, 2018.
