The Insult, a film by Lebanese-American cinematographer Ziad Doueiri, is nominated for the 2018 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The story follows a dispute between a Lebanese Christian and a Palestinian refugee. What started out as a small matter, balloons into a court and media circus, exposing fissures between Lebanon’s Christian and Muslim communities. WBEZ film contributor Milos Stehlik of Facets Chicago talks about the controversies surrounding the film. Muslim communities in Lebanon have called for boycotts of the film, but Doueiri is no stranger to controversy, His 2012 drama about a suicide bombing, The Attack, filmed partially in Tel Aviv, caused outrage and boycotts across the Middle East.

Milos will also review a film that won both a Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice award. The German film drama In the Fade follows a woman trying to get answers after her Kurdish husband and son are killed in Hamburg by a terrorist attack.
