Earlier this year, Germany approved the construction of a Russian gas pipeline called Nord Stream 2, which was supposed to expand on an existing pipeline under the Baltic Sea. The pipeline has been politically unpopular in Europe because it’s seen as a concession to Russia which has been waging war against Ukraine since 2014. The pipeline makes good economic sense, though, because energy prices in Western Europe are dependent on Russia, and many of the pipelines crossing through Ukraine into the EU cannot be maintained. At a dinner to kick off the 2018 NATO Summit in Brussels, President Trump berated European leaders for making the concession. Russia was one of the main topics on the table at the 2018 NATO Summit.
