By Julian Hayda, Jerome McDonnellNorth and South Korea are holding a formal summit next week for the first time in 11 years. A lot has changed in that time. Before, North Korea was barely getting its missiles off the ground. Now, the North has effectively risen to the ranks of global nuclear powers. President Trump has heightened military tensions with North Korea, especially after he offered a threat of “fire and fury” last summer.
U.S. encroachment has long been a motivation for North Korea to seek nuclear arms, and their offer to negotiate may signal confidence in their deterrence capability. Nonetheless, the summit between the North and the South is being touted as a “denuclearization” move. That’s something that Peace Action, an American grassroots disarmament organization, has been advocating for over 50 years.
Kevin Martin, the President of Peace Action, joins to discuss what he sees as a victory with North Korea.
