For nearly fifty years in Colombia there has been a civil war between the central government, leftist opposition groups and more recently, armed paramilitaries. According to Colombia’s National Center for Historical Memory, the conflict has killed around 220,000 people, the vast majority being civilians. In addition, more than five million civilians have been displaced, leaving Colombia with the world’s second largest IDP population. Peace talks between the factions continue in Cuba. Father Leonel Narvaez is a Catholic priest and sociologist. He’s founder and executive director of the Bogota based Fundación para la Reconciliación (Foundation for Reconciliation). He’s been on the front lines of the war. His work includes rehabilitating child soldiers.
