Pope Benedict XVI begins a six day trip to Mexico and Cuba tomorrow. This is the Pope’s first trip to both countries. Officially, the Pope’s trip will coincide with the 400th anniversary of the discovery of the statue of the Virgin of Charity. But many church observers believe Benedict’s trip is also an attempt to further position the church as a player within national politics in both countries.
