It remains unclear whether an attempted coup to overthrow President Pierre Nkurunziza of Burundi has been successful. The BBC reports that the president issued a statement saying the coup “had been foiled,” and that those responsible were “ being hunted by defense and security forces so that they can be brought to justice." But the president’s whereabouts are unknown and there are news reports of heavy gunfire in Bujumbura. Nkurunziza has been seeking a third term in office, something prohibited by the agreement that ended the country's 1993-2003 civil war. Journalist Kisuule Magala explains what’s behind the unrest in Burundi.
