In 2004, Tariq Ramadan, a Swiss citizen and professor at Oxford University had his U.S. visa revoked by the Bush administration for having donated to a Swiss charity that gave money to the Palestinian group Hamas.

Last month, Secretary of State Hilary Clinton signed an order revoking Professor Ramadan’s visa ban. Ramadan is one of Europe’s top Muslim scholars, and his book “Western Muslims and the Future of Islam,” calls on American and European Muslims to embrace their dual identities and become engaged citizens.

In his first visit to the United States in six years, Ramadan came to Chicago two weeks ago and spoke at a Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR). We hear an excerpt of his speech.
