Health Care and Iraq have both been major issues in this year’s presidential campaign, but they’re usually discussed separately.  In fact, the past two decades of war, sanctions and insurgency in Iraq have decimated the country’s health care sector.

Mental Health Care is especially needed and almost completely unavailable outside of Baghdad. Every day, there are survivors of bombings, kidnappings and torture that need special care to overcome the trauma.

Mary Fabri is Senior Director of the Marjorie Kovler Center for the Treatment of Survivors of Torture at the Heartland Alliance. 20 years ago they were among the pioneers in this country on treatment of torture survivors, now they’re helping established the first torture treatment facility in Iraqi Kurdistan.
