Today we’re delving into the mechanics and history of Guantanamo Bay and similar U.S. detention centers.

We often think of people who torture detainees as soldiers or military contractors. But those are not the only ones involved in torture.

Doctors and mental health specialists, employed by the Department of Defense, often consult on or even run abusive interrogation programs.

Many professional medical organizations have forbid the involvement of their members in such torture programs. The American Psychological Association (APA) – the largest association of psychologists worldwide – has not.  

Dr. Frank Summers is President of Psychoanalysts for Social Responsibility. Frank is encouraging colleagues who disagree with the APA’s stance on torture to withhold their annual dues.
