Retired Libyan general rallies support in military assault on Benghazi
Retired Libyan general Khalifa Hifter came out of exile to lead a military assault on the city of Benghazi. He’s done so claiming that the current government is failing to govern the country and has allowed Islamist terrorists to gain control. Hifter’s message seems to have struck a chord with a large number of Libyans, as citizens and soldiers alike, are following him. But some Libyans have voiced concern that Hifter is angling to be the next Gaddafi. Hifter is now pushing for the formation of a caretaker government. We’ll ask Ali Abdullatif Ahmida, political science professor at the University of New England, what he thinks is Hifter’s endgame.
