Sanctions Expert George Lopez On Canceled North Korea Summit And U.S. Sanctions On Iran

President Donald Trump has cancelled the planned June 12 summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Trump cited Kim’s “tremendous anger and open hostility” as the reason. North Korea called Vice President Mike Pence a "political dummy" after he said on Fox News on Monday that North Korea could “end up like Libya” if negotiations fail. Pyongyang also characterized Pence’s comments as "ignorant and stupid." Also on Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo outlined harsh new sanctions for Iran.

To discuss, we’re joined by George Lopez, professor emeritus of peace studies at the University of Notre Dame. An expert on economic sanctions, he served on a U.N. panel that monitored sanctions on North Korea. In a new op-ed, Lopez outlines why a new sanctions regime on Iran, at this time, is bad idea.
