In 1990 about 50 women in Saudi Arabia defied a ban on driving and were arrested. Last weekend, some women in Saudi Arabia got behind the wheel once again to demand the right to drive a car. No traffic law specifically prohibits women from driving in Saudi Arabia, but religious edicts in Saudi Arabia are often interpreted to mean women are not allowed to operate a car. Freelance journalist Vivian Salama will explain the history of the ban on driving and tell us about the state of women’s rights in Saudi Arabia.
