In 1939, eight-year-old Carla Shock fled Vienna, Austria with her mom and older brother. They took a train to Italy and then a boat to China, joining thousands of other Jews who were seeking refuge from the Holocaust in Shanghai, China. The traveling exhibition ‘Jewish Refugees in Shanghai,’ showing at the James Thompson Center through Friday, offers a glimpse into the communities and lives that some of the estimated 18,000 Jewish refugees in Shanghai created.
