Earlier this month the Turkish government declared an end to a nearly 90-year-old ban on wearing head scarves and veils in civil service jobs. When the ban was first past it was meant to separate the role of religion from the state. Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has said the ban represented “a dark period” in Turkey. Turkey is generally regarded in the west as a model for political Islam and democracy. Kerem Oktem, a research fellow at Oxford University, joins us to discuss the implications of the new law, upcoming elections, and the current political situation in Turkey.
