Recently, Jabhat al-Nusra, an Islamist group operating within Syria’s opposition to the regime of Bashar al-Assad, announced its affiliation with Al-Qaeda in Iraq. Islamist groups make up a large part of Syria’s resistance, but they are hardly monolithic.
