More than 300 people have been killed in anti-government protests in Nicaragua over the past few months, according to the U.N. high commissioner for human rights. Many Nicaraguans are fleeing their country in fear of being jailed or tortured. In a statement released Monday, the White House condemned President Daniel Ortega and his wife Vice President Rosario Murillo for their crackdown on opposition. The White House said the pair is “ultimately responsible for the pro-government para-police that have brutalized their own people.” The U.S. is revoking or restricting visas for officials who are responsible for police violence against protesters, according to the statement.
