After nearly two weeks of searching, we still know very little about how and why Malaysia Airlines flight 370 disappeared. Aircraft and ships are currently in search of floating objects that could potentially be pieces of debris that were detected by satellite images. The Malaysian government says the images represent a “credible lead” in the hunt for the missing plane. But information coming from the Malaysian government has, since the investigation began, not always been credible. Joshua Kurlantzick, a fellow for Southeast Asia at the Council on Foreign Relations, has written that “ The Malaysian government probably has done more over the past week to undermine the international image of Malaysia than anyone in the country’s nearly 60 years as an independent nation.” Joshua Kurlantzick joins us to discuss how Malaysian politics have impacted the search for the missing plane.
