Disney just announced its first Latina princess. The animated TV series called Elena of Avalor is set to premier next year. Disney describes the new character as living in a quote “enchanted fairytale kingdom inspired by diverse Latin cultures and folklore.” We wondered what this might mean — or not - for the Latino community. Frances Aparicio is here to help us make sense of this. She’s a professor of Spanish and Portuguese, and she heads the Latina and Latino Studies Program at Northwestern University.
