In December, 13 news organizations signed a joint letter protesting the rise in kidnapping of journalists in Syria. The Wall Street Journal and the New York Times were among those calling for greater protections for journalists trying to report on the conflict inside Syria. Syria was the deadliest place for journalists in 2013, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. 2013 was also the “second worst year on record for jailed journalists.” We’ll take stock of the state of press freedom for 2013 with Rob Mahoney, deputy director of the Committee to Protect Journalists.
