Cuba has a conflicted history with its gay and transgender population. The country imprisoned people with AIDS in the early years of the epidemic. During the Mariel boatlift in 1980, thousands of homosexuals were “encouraged” to leave the country. Yet Cuba is one of a the few countries that offers free gender assignment surgery to transgenders. We’ll talk with Cuban physician and LGBT activist, Dr. Alberto Roque Guerra. He’ll tell us about his years of advocacy to better the lives of Cuba’s LGBT Citizens.
Dr. Roque Guerra will also speak at a public meeting on Tuesday, September 1st, 7pm at Nookies Restaurant, 3334 N. Halsted. The event is co-sponsored by the Gay Liberation Network and the Chicago ALBA Solidarity Committee.
