We’re kicking off Worldview production assistant Anna Waters’ series on transgender identity around the world with a conversation with Mehlab Jameel, a transgender activist in Pakistan. In early May, Pakistan’s parliament passed a landmark bill granting sweeping rights to transgender people. The Transgender Persons Protection of Rights Act includes the right to have their gender identity recognized on official government documents and prohibits discrimination against transgender people in many arenas, including while at school or work. Jameel helped write the bill, and she joins us from Lahore to discuss how the bill came to be and how Pakistani culture treats gender nonconforming people.
