Transnistria is a state that lies between the River Dniester and the eastern Moldovan border with Ukraine. The region split away from Moldova after a brief war and the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1992. But the international community has never recognized the split and Moldova has designated the area an autonomous territory with special legal status. Transnistria is one of four Russian-supported breakaway states. Russian troops are stationed there. The area relies on Russia for economic support. Much of the population is Russian speaking and in recent polls most Transnistrians said they would like to be a part of Russia. Many experts believe it could be the next Crimea.
