Recently discovered documents show that U.K. immigration officials asked “shockingly degrading” questions when investigating people seeking asylum based on their sexual orientation. British immigration officials responded that staff were “not permitted to ask inappropriate or intrusive questions” and that questions about sexuality are asked “as sensitively as possible.” The abuses were documented by the LGBT rights group, Stonewall, in their report, No Going Back Lesbian And Gay People And The Asylum System. Richard Lane, spokesperson for Stonewall, tells us about what his group calls the “systemic homophobia” of the U.K.’s asylum process. (Photo: Flickr/Geoff Dexter)
