Understanding Iran's role in the Syrian conflict

Iran is one of Syria's closest regional allies and could play a critical role in the determining the course of U.S. action in Syria, some foreign policy analysts say. According to Reuters, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has warned members of the state assembly about U.S. discourse on chemical warfare. "In the case of Syria, the chemical attack is a pretext...The Americans try to play with words and pretend that they've become involved in this case for humanitarian aims," Khamenei said in a speech on Thursday.
