On Thursday, Mark Lippert, U.S. Ambassador to South Korea, was attacked by an anti-american extremist wielding a knife. Lippert’s injuries were serious, but not life-threatening. North Korea called the attack “ “knife slashes of justice.” Police are investigating the suspect, Kim Ki-jong, who claims he acted alone and was spurred on by the the initiation of annual, South Korea-American military drills. Pyongyang has claimed the drills are a precursor for war. We’ll talk about the mysterious attack and other regional issues with Bruce Cumings, professor of History at the University of Chicago.
