Tensions are high in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as official presidential elections approach on December 23rd. This past weekend, the U.S. State Department ordered all non-emergency governmental staff and family members to leave the country. This announcement comes after a series of violent and malicious attacks all over the country. Last week, an arsonist’s fire in the capital, Kinshasa, destroyed thousands of voting machines and ballot boxes. This week, Congolese security forces opened fire on a group of opposition supporters, killing four people.
