Weekend Passport: From Manila to Acapulco
Every Friday, our Global Citizen Nari Safavi stops by for Weekend Passport, where he shows us how to travel the world without ever leaving Chicago. This week, we explore the cultural, linguistic and historical connections that bind Mexico to the Philippines, from the galleon trade at the onset of Spanish colonialism through to the shared experiences of Mexican and Filipino Americans. We’re doing that through a new exhibit at the Zhou B Art Center in Bridgeport, which uses art by artists of Mexican and Philippine origin to draw aesthetic and cultural parallels between the two cultures and lived experiences. Joining us to talk more about the exhibit are a painter whose work is featured in it, Eulalio Fabie de Silva, and the exhibit’s co-curator, artist and community organizer Cesar Conde.
