It’s been nearly a year since Russia annexed Crimea. In March, 2014 Crimeans voted in a referendum where 97.6 percent were said to have voted to join Russia. Many countries have never recognized that vote. President Obama called the Russian annexation “illegitimate.” Journalist Dimiter Kenarov went to Crimea to find out how annexation is working out and wrote about it in Foreign Policy. In his piece Putin’s Peninsula Is a Lonely Island he writes, “The place feels sad and forlorn-like an abandoned amusement park.” PHOTO: Russian President Vladimir Putin attends a parade marking the Victory Day in Sevastopol, Crimea, Friday, May 9, 2014.(AP Photo / Ivan Sekretarev, File)
