US special forces attempted to carry out two raids over the weekend in North Africa to capture alleged terrorists linked to Al Shabab and Al Qaeda. In Libya, commandos successfully removed Abu Anas al-Liby, who is believed to be behind the 1998 US embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania. The snatch mission in Somalia, however, didn’t go as smoothly as planned. Navy Seals were forced to retreat without alleged Al Shabab leader Abdulkadir Mohamed Abdulkadir. Ahmed Samatar, James Wallace Professor of International Studies at Macalester College, weighs in on the latest raids and tells us what he thinks is necessary successfully unravel Al Shabab.
