In a September decision, Kenya’s Supreme Court nullified the August’s presidential election.

In the first election, President Uhuru Kenyatta won with just over 54 percent of the vote over opposition leader Raila Odinga. Citing irregularity, the court called for new elections. A rerun was scheduled for Oct. 26. But Raila Odinga announced his plan last week to withdraw from the race. 

Opposition supporters have been holding protests, leading to violent clashes with police. Human Rights Watch reported that Kenyan police had killed at least 33 people, possibly as many as 50, in protests following the elections. The government has also banned demonstrations in three cities: the capital Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu.
