NSA surveillance leaker, Edward Snowden, made news again at a recent press conference with Russian president, Vladimir Putin. Snowden asked if Russia engaged in mass surveillance on its citizens. Putin claimed his government did no such thing. New Zealand and other governments have taken a page from the U.S. playbook on surveillance, passing controversial laws and reaching agreements with the U.S. to assist in mass gathering of data. Laura Pitter is a senior national security researcher for Human Rights Watch. She also writes on U.S. national security policies.
