World History Minute: The Election of Papa Doc in Haiti

On September 22, 1957, Francois Duvalier, who came to be known as Papa Doc, was elected president of Haiti. He remained in power until his death in 1971. 

It’s estimated that as many as 60,000 were killed under his rule. 

Historian John Schmidt recalls his rise to power.
