World History Moment: 1986 Philippine Revolution
We’ll talk to historian John Schmidt about President Ferdinand Marcos’s fall from power in the Philippines. In 1972, he declared martial law and began rule as a dictator. Marcos would order the assassination of opposition leader, Senator Ninoy Aquino in 1983. Eventually, Marcos was toppled and sought refuge in the U.S. The so-called People Power revolution had succeeded. Aquino’s widow, Corazon, would be sworn in as the country’s new President.
