Historian John Schmidt takes us to 1240, when the Teutonic Knights invaded Novgorod, a city-state in what is now northern Russia. 

Novgorod’s commander, Alexander Nevsky, dared the Knights to attack across a frozen lake. The battle went on for two hours, until the Knights were worn down from fighting on the slippery ice. Today, it’s seen as a major turning point in Russian history.
