After Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi realized he could use invisible waves to send electrical signals, he applied for a grant and a patent. Upon hearing his claims, one government official said he should be sent to an insane asylum.  

Historian John Schmidt tells us how Marconi proved it could happen — and  how that lead to the radio we know today.
