In 1936, the British Empire stretched around the world. That January, King George V died. He was succeeded by his son, who became Edward VIII. The new king was charming and popular. He was still unmarried. Though he’d been involved with a number of ladies, there had been nothing serious—until the American Wallis Simpson came along.
