Historian John Schmidt takes us back to 1857, when people in India rebelled against the rule of the British-owned East India Trading Company. The company was defended by its private army of mostly native Indians, known as Sepoys. The rebellion—which is known as India’s First War of Independence—posed a considerable threat to British power.
