World History Moment: Napoleon Returns To France

This portrait of Napoleon, painted by Horace Vernet in 1815- the same year as the battle of Waterloo - is one of 25 “neglected” paintings from the basement of London’s National Gallery, April 15, 1983, which are to go on special exhibition next week. Because of a lack of display space, many of the gallery’s art works are stored in the basement, and are only rarely seen in public. (AP PHOTO)
