Sometimes countries appear and sometimes they disappear depending on the local politics. The borders of Europe, in particular, have changed countless times over the centuries.

Historian John Schmidt tells us one story of how Poland disappeared from the map in October 1795. Pressure from Prussia, Russia, and Austria forced the state out of existence for more than 120 years.
