Since the early 1990s, Ethiopia has been essentially a one-party state run by Meles Zenawi, a former rebel leader who died in 2012. Eskinder Nega is a journalist educated in America, and one of the few members of the press to consistently call out the government for abuses of power. Since September 2011, Nega has been imprisoned on trumped-up charges of terrorism. Despite numerous calls from press freedom and human rights organizations, the Obama Administration, for whom Ethiopia is a pivotal anti-terrorism ally, has been largely silent. Jason McLure, a former foreign correspondent for Bloomberg who worked with Nega, joins Worldview to discuss his case and why it matters.
