Last month, Worldview embarked on a seven-city road trip; today, we bring you an installment of our Global Notes segment from London, Ontario, where we visited global music festival TD Sunfest. Afro-Cuban band OKAN features Elizabeth Rodriguez and Magdelys Savigne, both composers and multi-instrumentalists. Fusing jazz and folk into their music, OKAN sings about immigration, bravery and love. Savigne sat down Catalina Maria Johnson, host and producer of Beat Latino on Vocalo, to talk about how OKAN developed its sound.

The Worldview bus tour visited communities throughout the Great Lakes region for a week as we celebrate the show’s twenty-fifth year on air. From water insecurity in Flint to indigenous rights in Kalamazoo, we are sharing stories that allow you to experience the world through the communities in your own backyard.

OKAN will perform in Chicago on Wednesday, August 14 at 8:30 p.m. at the Old Town School of Folk Music, located at 4544 N Lincoln Ave.
