One person was killed and four others injured in a drive-by shooting Sunday afternoon at a restaurant on Chicago’s far South Side, according to police.

The shooting occurred just before 2 p.m. when shots were fired from a white SUV, killing a male customer who was dining outside in a tent, police spokeswoman Jessica Rocco said.

Police said he was the intended target. Four other people who were shot were taken to hospitals for treatment. Police provided no further details.

Police have not taken anyone into custody. Donovan Price said he had visited the hospital where at least some of the victims were taken and described the family as “distraught.” Price, a pastor and founder of the Solutions and Resources which does outreach to victims of gun violence, said he was told that all of the victims are adults.

Lumes Pancake House, a Morgan Park staple where the shooting took place, is typically packed on Sunday afternoons with those who had recently attended church. But, Price said, those crowds have diminished since the start of the pandemic. He noted that the shooting is especially sad since those crowds were just beginning to return to restaurants.

“That this had to happen on a beautiful Sunday afternoon is tragic,” Price said.
